 1.  What are the volunteer opportunities at DePorres

2.  What is the difference between Basic Literacy
and ESOL?

Basic Literacy tutors teach reading and writing to English
speaking adults, who read below a fifth grade level. Tutoring
is done one-to-one.

English for Speakers of Other Languages - ESOL tutors
teach conversational English to Non - English speaking adults.
Tutoring is done one-to-one or in small groups of two to four.

3.  What qualifications do I need to become a tutor?

You need to enjoy working with people, read and write English
well and relate to others with sensitivity and compassion. You
also must be able to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate
patience and perseverance, and be flexible.

4.  Do I need teaching experience?

No teaching experience is required. You do have to be a high
school graduate or have a GED.

5.  Do I have to be trained?

Yes.  Tutors are required to attend a training session to learn
tutoring techniques and lesson planning. You are introduced to the series we use, i.e. Laubach Way to Reading; Side By Side.


6.  When are the training sessions and how long are they?

We offer training workshops throughout the year.  A workshop
involves 8 hours of training.

7.  What kind of commitment is needed?

We request that you make a time commitment of one year in order
to guarantee continuity for the student. Tutors meet their students
twice a week for 1 ½ hours each session, either on Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday, or once a week for 2 hours (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday).

8.  Where do I tutor?

You tutor at DePorres Place Adult Literacy Center. 

9.  Who are the students

The students are adults over the age of 18, whowish to learn speak English and/or improve their reading and writing skills.

10.  Do I have to be a tutor to volunteer?

No.  There are other volunteer opportunities in addition to tutoring at DePorres Place Adult Literacy Center, including event planning, community relations, computer lab, or Board Member.

11.  Is DePorres P.L.A.C.E. open all year round?

Yes, it is.

12.  Can I take time for trips, vacations, and family visits?

Yes, you can. Tutors are asked to work out their schedule with their students. Remember, the students may also need time off for visits, vacations, and emergencies. It is a two way street.
