Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Basic Literacy and ESOL?
Basic Literacy tutors teach reading and writing to adults who read below an eighth grade level. Tutoring is done one-to-one.
ESOL tutors work with individuals or small groups of foreign-born students teaching conversational English, reading and writing.
What qualifications do I need to become a tutor?
You need to enjoy working with people, read and write English well and relate to others with sensitivity and compassion. You also must be able to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate patience and perserverance, and be flexible.
Do I need teaching experience?
No. You do have to be a high school graduate or have a GED.
Do I have to be trained?
Yes. Tutors are required to attend a training session to learn tutoring techniques and lesson planning. They are introduced to the Laubach Way to Reading series and the Side-by-Side series.
When are the training sessions and how long are they?
We offer four to five workshops throughout the year. A workshop involveds 8 to 12 hours of training.
